What the College-Admissions Scandal Reveals - The Atlantic

Felicity Huffman leaves a federal courthouse on April 3. Gretchen Ertl / Reuters Updated at 5:23 p.m. ET on April 9, 2018. Sweet Christ, vindication! How long has it been? Years? No, decades. If hope is the thing with feathers, I was a plucked bird. Long ago, I surrendered myself to the fact that the horrible, horrible private-school parents of Los Angeles would get away with their nastiness forever. But even before the molting, never in my wildest imaginings had I dared to dream that the arc of the moral universe could describe a 90-degree angle and smite down mine enemies with such a hammer fist of fire and fury that even I have had a moment of thinking, Could this be a bit too much?...

early modern english - Did lawyer have a broader meaning in Shakespeare s time? - English Language Usage Stack Exchange

In Act 4, Scene 2 of Shakespeare's Henry VI, Part 2, Dick the butcher, one of Jack Cade's rebels, shouts: The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers. The rebels bring in the clerk of Chartham, who "can read and write and cast account" (i.e. add up accounts). Jack Cade calls the man's capabilities "monstrous" (i.e. unnatural, in the sense that illiteracy was natural). After the clerk also confesses that he can write his name instead of signing documents with a cross, the rebels decide to hang him. (This was obviously long before the emergence of Stack Exchange.) But a clerk is not a lawyer. In Act 4, Scene 7, there is another tirade against literacy, when Jack Cade says to Lord Saye (...

Quotes on Law and Lawyers, Hong Kong Lawyer

Compiled by Jenkin Chan, Foo and Li I might repeat to myself, slowly and soothingly, a list of quotations beautiful from minds profound; if I can remember any of the damn things. – Dorothy Parker (1893–1967) American poet, short story writer, critic and satirist A lawyer must first get on, then get honour, and then get honest. “Laws are like cobwebs, which may catch small flies, but let wasps and hornets break through.” – Jonathan Swift (1667–1745), Essay on the Faculties of the Mind Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, political pamphleteer, poet and cleric I use the rules to frustrate the law. But I didn’t set up the ground rules. Here lies a lawyer, laugh if you will, In mercy, kind Province...

Plain English, newlawyerlanguage

It’s not often that an amateur scribe like your humble author receives free, unsolicited advice on his writing. But Mr Robert Angyal of Queen’s Counsel has come to the aid – in this instance – of my Queen’s English! His tool: Plainglish (“Plain English” for the uninitiated — OK, that’s my term; check out Robert’s earlier post on lawyers’ lexicon). The patient: a blog post of mine and middling quality (I said I was humble) from 19 June 2015, which is republished here, in the left-hand column below. Wielding with deft precision the fine cut of the scribal scalpel, Robert has trimmed the verbiage from my textually beleaguered...

Lawyer openings. meaning - “A lawyer by training”? - English Language Learners Stack Exchange A lawyer by training, he said he was shocked that the person who gave him the Conyers documents declined his offer to pay Lawyer by profession. I didn’t understand what this prepositional phrase implies. I looked this phrase up but I didn’t see anything related to. Experienced lawyer The phrase by training basically means the same thing as the expressions by trade and by profession. On becoming a silk: ritual, restriction and royal allegiance, openDemocracy

I recently became a silk. I took part in the ceremony in Westminster Hall when new Queen’s Counsel declare their readiness to serve Her Majesty and receive from the Lord Chancellor her “letters patent” – an archaically worded document bearing a large royal seal and encased in a scarlet leather pouch. The setting evokes the continuity of the English legal tradition and the antiquity of its institutions. It was the scene of the trial of Charles the First and until 1875 of the Court of Queen’s Bench. The Lord Chancellor – Ken Clarke, heavily disguised in full-bottomed wig and a richly embroidered dressing gown – arrived in procession preceded by a mace bearer. My appointment is merely honorary...

Attorney or Lawyer Which? The Flaming Word

Barefoot’s World In the U.S., they’re collectively called everything from “attorney” to “lawyer” to “counselor.” Are these terms truly equivalent, or has the identity of one been mistaken for another? You probably don’t want to hire an attorney What exactly is a “Licensed BAR Attorney?” A credential accompanies every legal paper produced by attorneys – along with a State BARCertification number. The credential is issued by the boards of law examiners, the applicant having acquired a minimum competency in law. In most cases, the board is an independent, self-financing, separately incorporated group of law professionals, administered by the state bar association, a branch of the...

PBS Silk lends drama to British legal system - Houston Chronicle

Americans often have trouble understanding accents and idioms in British film and TV shows, but with "Silk," a three-part, six-hour series on "Masterpiece Mystery!," they'll be challenged to understand the bewigged British legal system as well. It is worth the effort, though, and even if you don't entirely get the difference between a barrister and a solicitor and that lawyers in the same firm may be called on to either prosecute or defend a client. Although the series, created by Peter Moffat ("Criminal Justice"), sometimes teeters on the edge of melodrama, the characters and performances maintain our interest. While the series' title may intentionally suggest lingerie, "silk" is British...
