Mir Islam And Troy Woody Identified By Witness At Trial For Murder Of Tomi Masters

In a surreal court appearance Wednesday, Troy Woody and Mir Islam, the two American hackers accused of killing Tomi Masters in the Philippines last year, were identified by a witness as having dumped a box later found to contain Masters’ body in the Pasig River. The pair, who showed up for their murder trial in Manila with no attorneys present, unsuccessfully attempted to have their trial delayed and were instead appointed representation by the presiding judge. Masters was dating Woody before her death, and the two men have given conflicting accounts of what happened. BuzzFeed News spoke to Woody and Islam, who were clad in yellow prison shirts and flip-flops, as they sat outside the...

‘Parking lot vigilante’ Michael Drejka guilty in racially fraught case -

Tampa attorney Theresa Jean-Pierre Coy knew she’d get criticized for helping defend Michael Drejka. She is an African American, and her client was a white man accused of fatally shooting a black man in a parking lot argument. She did it anyway, she says, on grounds of principle: Upholding equal treatment for all is the only way to advance the rule of law for all. “It’s about making sure the government makes their case,” says Ms. Jean-Pierre Coy. The government did. Last week a Florida jury found Mr. Drejka guilty of manslaughter in the killing of Markeis McGlockton outside a convenience store in Clearwater, Florida. The case was racially fraught from the beginning. But the guilty verdict,...

Fifth Circuit Rules New Orleans Debtors’ Prison Scheme Violates Constitutional Rights of the City’s Poorest Citizens, Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law

Washington, D.C. — The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Friday that the debtors’ prison scheme run by the Orleans Parish Criminal District Court (OPCDC), where indigent people are jailed for being unable to pay court debts, gives judges an unconstitutional conflict of interest. Rejecting an appeal from the OPCDC judges, the appeals court upheld U.S. District Court Judge Sarah Vance’s ruling that New Orleans’ predatory funding scheme makes it impossible for the OPCDC to function as the neutral tribunal the Constitution demands. The Court of Appeals held that when the OPCDC judges make judicial decisions that generate money they rely on and control, the “temptation” to make those...

Longtime American Jewish Leader, Lawyer Kenneth Bialkin, Is Mourned, Jewish Israel News

Longtime American Jewish Leader, Lawyer Kenneth Bialkin, Is Mourned When I was working with a few partners and potential investors nearly 20 years ago on a plan for what became The New York Sun, one of them asked if we had a preference on who to use as a lawyer to create the company. I shrugged. The partner went on to suggest that we use Kenneth Bialkin, a partner at Skadden, Arps. People will be impressed, the partner predicted. I went on to add Bialkin’s name to the final slide of the presentation we were using as we went around to promote the idea of a new daily newspaper in New York City. Whether it helped us raise any of the capital we eventually did raise, I have no idea. What I do...

Anguilla — A Connecticut man accused of killing a hotel worker in Anguilla returned to the island for a court appearance Thursday. Scott Hapgood arrived at the preliminary hearing amidst unprecedented security and attention, eager for a trial where he says his innocence will be proven. "Every court appearance means we're one step closer to putting this nightmare behind us," he said. The 44-year-old financial advisor was on vacation with his family at a luxury resort last April when Kenny Mitchel, an employee, came to their room. What happened next is unclear. But a violent struggle ended with Mitchel's death and Hapgood bloody and bruised. Hapgood was charged with manslaughter. Scott...
